It is that time of the year when the Stanley Cup Finals are on the schedule. In the first game of the series, Washington Capitals will face the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Capitals were able to eliminate the Lightning in seven games to get to the finals and on the other side, the Golden Knights were better than the Winnipeg Jets in five games.
Washington Capitals Form
The Washington Capitals did not have a good start in the last round against the Lightning in the Eastern Conference Finals. However, same as in the series against the Penguins, the Caps were able to bounce back as they won the final two games. This is going to be the second time in their history for the Caps to be in the Stanley Cup final. What is interesting about the Capitals is that they were significantly better at their away games rather than playing at home during the playoffs. The Capitals overall away record stands at 29-22 and they have averaged 3.06 goals per game and have allowed 3.04 goals per game in those games. Also, it seems that Alex Ovechkin is in a good form as he has scored 12 goals in the postseason so far.
On the offensive side of the game, the Capitals are the 2nd best team in the league during the postseason in scoring at 3.47 goals per game, converting on 28.8% of their chances. At the defensive side of the game, during the playoffs, they are one of the best teams so far as they are placed on the 3rd spot in goals allowed, conceding an average of 2.47 goals per game, allowing the opposing teams to convert on 24.6% of their chances.
Vegas Golden Knights Form
The Vegas Golden Knights are the biggest surprise of the season. Nobody expected that they will win the Pacific Division. And surely nobody expected that they will reach the Stanley Cup Finals. The Knights made history as they are the first team that reached the Stanley Cup in their first season. They are heading into the first game in a better position as they only played five games against the Jets. The general expectation is that the Knights have a good chance to win the Stanley Cup this year. The Golden Knights have gone 35-13 at their home ground this season and they have averaged 3.56 goals per game and have allowed 2.38 goals per game in those games.
On the offensive side of the game, the Golden Knights have been below average in the postseason so far as they are placed on the 9th in scoring at 2.87 goals per game, converting on 17.6% of their chances. On the defensive end of the ice ,they are the 2nd best team in goals conceded, giving up 1.80 goals per game, allowing teams to convert on 17.5% of their chances.
The Golden Knights have made history this season. They have the chance to become the first team to win the Stanley Cup in their first season. On the other side, the Caps are one of the most solid teams this season, but they have never won the Stanley Cup. They will surely be a reckoning force in this final series but I expect that the Golden Knights will dominate the first game. Go for Vegas in this game especially because their good form at their home ice.
