New York Yankees vs. Washington Nationals, MLB Opening Day. After a long wait due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the special day is finally here. It has been a boring time, but now we have baseball. The Yankees travel to the home of last season’s champions in hopes of starting the season within the new “normal”.
New York Yankees: This year is not easy.
The Yankees know that this season is different, but that does not mean it will not be as difficult as the previous one. Last season the Yankees were the first in the East Division, the record was positive with 103 wins and 59 losses for a winning average of .636 overall. As everyone knows, the team lost to the Astros in the ALS Championship Series in six games. And then a controversy began over whether or not the Houston Astros had cheated.
This season is short, only 60 games. The Yankees will likely have the same advantage as last year while playing at home. Last year the Yankees’ home record was 60-26, and on the road 48-37. With fewer games, the main strategy will be with the Pitchers and the use of the best averages to hit the ball.
Gerrit Cole will open the first game of the season in Washington with his new team. Cole spent two years with the Astros, in 2018 he was champion with them. And he previously spent five seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Last season Cole stats were 20-5, .800, 2.50 ERA, 142 hits allowed, 326 Strike Outs (career high) and 0.895 WHIP.
Washington Nationals: Defending Champions.
At home the Nationals were 54-35 last season. It was an unforgettable season. Despite having to play for a wild card, the Nationals proved strong, winning a divisional series against the Dodgers. After that they won the NLS against the St. Louis Cardinals 4-0. The final victory, and the most important was hard but in seven games they won against the Houston Astros the first title in history for the franchise.
At home the lead has always been good for the Nationals, although they struggled with the Astros in the season finale. Last season the Nationals were allowing just 4.74 runs per home game, 8.93 Hits and 1.40 home runs. The offensive was strong with an average of 5.45 runs, 1.52 home runs and 9.00 Hits.
Max Scherzer had a good season in 2019 with 11-7 and 2.92 ERA. Since his arrival at the Nationals, Scherzer has had a new air as a professional. The past four seasons have been good, especially 2016 and 2018 with an average of 18.5 wins and less than 10 losses. A few hours ago, Scherzer suffered a slight injury when he was hit in the face, but apparently he will be available to play against the Yankees at home.
