The MLB is back in action on Thursday as the New York Mets will clash with the Washington Nationals at the Nationals Park in Washington in DC. This will be the first game of the four-game series.
The Mets will give the nod to Jason Vargas and the Nationals will counter with Max Scherzer.
New York Mets Form
The Mets were poor this season. They are one of the teams that have allready thinking about next season. They will head into this game after a defeat from the Phillies on Wednesday. They can now aim to finish this season on a high as their pride is the only thing that they can play for. New York has averaged 5.07 runs per game and has allowed 4.93 runs per game on the road.
Jason Vargas record against the Nationals stands at 1-3 with a 0.83 ERA in six games (three starts). This will be his first game start at this stadium.
On the offensive side of the game, the Mets have been poor so far as they are placed on the 22nd in the league in scoring, putting up 4.28 runs per game, while also being on the 28th spot in hitting at .236 and 19th place in homers with a total of 164. On the mound, they have been below average as they are placed on the 19th spot in the league in ERA at 4.17 while also being on the 13th place in WHIP at 1.28 and 8th in K’s with 1342.
Washington Nationals Form
The Nationals are pretty much done this season. They had a disappointing season as they will not be part of the postseason. However, it seems that they have started the rebuilding process as they have been playing well in the last few games. Their recent record stands at 8 wins in their last 11 games.
The Nationals have averaged 4.95 runs per game and have allowed 4.54 runs per game here at home for the year. Max Scherzer record against the Mets stands at 9-4 with a 2.34 ERA in 16 games (15 starts).
On the offensive side of the game, they have been solid as they are placed on the 10th spot in the league in scoring putting up an average of 4.70. They are also placed on the 11th in hitting at .252 and 13th spot in homers with a total of 168 so far.
On the mound, they are placed on the 16th spot in the league in ERA at 4.02, while also being on the 9th spot in WHIP at 1.24 and on the 11th spot in K’s with 1325.
The Mets are a poor team this year and it seems that they wait for the season to finish. On the other side, the Nationals playing well after accepting the fact that they will not play in the postseason. They aim to rebuild and it seems that they started that process very early. I expect a solid win for the Nationals in this game.
