One of the most basic things you can learn about is the sports handicapping lingo. Fortunately, The Whale has you covered. There are so many confusing terms associated with sports handicapping and wagering that we’ve compiled a few of them for you to check out.
Reading American Sports Handicapping Lines
No guide to the very basics of sports handicapping would be complete without covering the somewhat confusing issue of American handicapping lines. When beginners think of wagering on sports, they are likely to consider that odds are listed in the same way they are in horse racing or abroad. In these areas, odds are generally listed as 2/1, or two-to-one, where a winning $2 wager will pay out $1.
With American lines, however, the listings are slightly counterintuitive, as the predicated losing team has positive numbers and the winning team negative numbers. If the Colts are playing the Chargers, for example, and the Chargers are expected to win, they may be listed as -150, and the Colts +130. What this means is that you would need to wager $150 dollars on the Chargers to make $100. Conversely, a $100 wager on the Colts would result in $130 in winnings profits
Now that American lines have been covered, it’s possible to move on to another form of lines, namely decimal lines. Using the same teams and odds as we used previously, decimal odds can be described simply as follows: The Colts would be +150 in American lines, and 2.5 in decimal lines. What this means is that a $1 wager on the Colts would pay $1.50 in winnings. If these two sums are added together, you get the 2.5 decimal wager line.

Now that you know how to read the lines, the next step is to get in there and start wagering! There are tons of different ways to wager – and have fun – so, don’t get overwhelmed.
